William Blumentritt

April 6, 1959 — February 8, 2023

Will Blumentritt died in the loving care of his family and devoted caregivers late February 7, 2023, at the age of 63.

Diagnosed at 54 with Younger Onset Alzheimer’s, Will faced his diagnosis with courage and strength. He strongly believed there should be no stigma and was very open about his dementia, including giving several speeches about his experience.

Will loved music, especially Pink Floyd, and was an excellent musician. He played bass in a number of bands over the years starting in high school. He attended the first class of Houston’s HSPVA (High School for the Performing & Visual Arts). In his later years, he and Marie Angell formed The Snake Charmers, recorded an album (“Been Gone Too Long”) and placed in the finals of the Houston Press Music Awards Blues category.

An alumnus of the University of Houston, Will earned both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. He taught math and physics for 5 years at Scarborough High School in Houston, then worked for more than 20 years at SAIC, a NASA contractor, in Safety & Mission Assurance for the International Space Station.

Will was an avid canoer, active member of the Houston Canoe Club,  and loved to paddle in the still water in the Houston area and enjoy being surrounded by nature.

He also loved the desert, saying he could sit for hours watching the light change. He inherited some land in Terlingua, Texas, and hiking in the Big Bend was one of his favorite vacation destinations.

Will touched many lives through teaching, playing music, his work, and his hobbies. He was devoted to his family and supported them in their own paths to adulthood.
