Obituary

In Memoriam for Lucy Virginia Candler

November 9, 1931 - October 11, 2021

Lucy Virginia Candler was born in Louisville, Kentucky on Nov. 9, 1931. She was the middle daughter of three girls. Her parents were Sobieski and Virginia Noland.

Lucy graduated from Louisville Girls High School in 1949. During the next eight years, she worked for several banks, first in Louisiville and later in San Antonio, Texas, where she had moved after marrying her children’s father. Her daughters were born there. She moved to Texas City, Texas in 1960 and worked for Union Carbide for the next nine years as one of a team of data entry employees in the early use of computers. She enjoyed these years of small-town living.

In 1969 she married Steve Candler and moved to Houston. Lucy began volunteering for the neighborhood civic club and for the umbrella organization of civic clubs for the southwest area of the city. She also volunteered for the Houston Parks and Recreation Department and Houston Public Libraries.

As empty-nesters, Lucy and Steve moved west to Sugarland, where she worked as the attendance clerk for Missouri City Junior High School. One of her favorite parts of the job was getting to know the students. During this period, Steve suffered a stroke. Lucy reorganized their lives to support this challenge and joined the Stroke Groups of Texas. Eventually she became the leader of the Westbury Stroke Group for ten years and the Memorial Drive Methodist Church Stroke Group for six years.

In 1989 Lucy moved back to Houston and into the Spring Shadows Townhomes complex, in the greater Spring Branch area, to be closer to family. She enjoyed many years crossing paths with her neighbors as she walked her dog, Mabel. She was very happy living there.

Lucy found her spiritual home and a community of dear friends at Holy Cross Lutheran Church. She quickly became involved in different programs, including regular bible study group, Friendship Club, Circle Group, the annual Rummage Sale, Sunday School and assisting with Sunday morning greeting and ushering.

She is survived by daughter Iris Jisha; daughter Joyce Pyndus and husband Stephen; stepson Steve Candler and wife Pam; her wonderful grandchildren Virginia Jisha, Michael Pyndus, Jonathan Pyndus and his wife Julie; and her sister Patty Bronocco and niece Lynda Webeler and nephew David Bronocco.
