George Holmes

August 2, 1951 — September 17, 2022

George Nelson Holmes died peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, September 17th, 2022. During his 71 years George lived a fun, active, colorful, and rewarding life. While he overcame prostate cancer in 2006, he ultimately succumbed to cancer in 2022.

George was the younger of two sons of George Augustus Holmes and Werdna Eugenia Holmes of Shreveport, Louisiana. George attended and graduated from Captain Shreve Highschool in 1969. He attended the University of Texas, Austin campus prior to joining the United States Army. He was stationed in Korea during his tour and was very proud to have served his country.

George prospered in his long and fruitful career as a paralegal. He enjoyed research and excelled at problem solving, including an acute eye for finding specific case law. He was well known for his detailed and accurate subject analysis.

Over time, George developed a passion and deep appreciation for various forms of art and the artists themselves. George and Dee Holmes established their own art collection in their home and were avid supporters of new artists and often hosted the unveiling of new pieces.

One of the greatest joys in George’s life was cycling; participating in the MS150, Bike the Bay, and many other charitable bike rides. Included in his vast collection of bicycles were his most favorite and prized bikes, a customized Penny Farthing and a Cannondale. It was not unusual to see George riding through the neighborhood on a Saturday morning on his Penny Farthing.

George had a vibrant social life and loved serving the Fort Bend community. He was a contributor and supporter of The Best in the West, Men Who Cook, Surfs Up, and a variety of other charitable organizations. George was a precinct chair for the Republican party and prior election process judge. He was a member of the Texas Bar College, recruited member of the Selective Service System for the United States, as well as a member of the Sugarland Optimist Club and Exchange Club.

George was predeceased by his parents George Augustus Holmes and Werdna Eugenia Holmes. He is survived by his brother John Holmes (his partner Mary Hudson), his wife Darlene “Dee” Holmes, his two stepdaughters Dawn Warg (her spouse Herbert “Fox” Warg) and Tina Hurd (her spouse Michael Hurd), and his grandchildren Brittany Warg and Zachary Hurd.
