Clyde Sloan

November 4, 1943 — August 27, 2022

In loving memory of Clyde Elton Sloan, Jr.

Clyde Elton Sloan, Jr. passed away peacefully at home on August 27, 2022 and went to be with the Lord.

Clyde was born on November 4, 1943 in Houston, Texas, but lived most of his youth in Baytown, TX.  After graduating from Robert E. Lee High School (class of 1962), he went on to study business at the University of Texas and then transferred to the University of Houston where he graduated in 1968.  Clyde met his wife Lee Etta at the University Religion Center while attending the University of Houston and they married in 1968.

After graduation, Clyde began to work for Allstate as an insurance agent and had a successful 32-year career until he retired in 2000 and sold his agency to his son.  During his career he built a prosperous agency and served as treasurer on the Board of Concerned Insurance Texas Agents.

Clyde was predeceased by his parents, Clyde and Catherine Sloan and is survived by his wife of 53 years, Lee Etta; brother William Sloan; son Warren Sloan and fiancé Micah Stewart; daughter Martha Sloan Salas and son-in-law Ruben Salas.  He is also survived by his six grandchildren, Christian, Samuel and Abigail Salas and Alexander, Megan and James Sloan.

Clyde loved his family, church and community.  He served as Scout Master and in other leadership roles for the Boy Scouts of America Troop 644 at St. Christopher’s for over 30 years. He also served others as a coach, elementary school mentor, active church member, member of the church Vestry and church usher, and precinct judge, alternate judge and volunteer for many local and national elections.  Clyde was loyal to his roots and gave back to the schools he attended.  He served as Chairman and board member for the Robert E. Lee Reunion Committee and was very active in the University of Houston Bauer College of Business Alumni Association.  He also served on the board and volunteered for the Cougar Cookers, a Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo cook-off team raising money for student scholarships.  Clyde loved the University of Houston and never missed a football game.

Clyde had a contagious smile and never missed an opportunity to spend time with his family, attend a grandchild’s sports game or school activity or attend a social event of any kind.  He never met a stranger and wouldn’t hesitate to share a bad dad joke or give advice to others.  Clyde was known for helping friends and neighbors whenever needed.  He will be missed dearly by those who knew and loved him.

Clyde’s family would like to thank his doctors and clinical care teams at MD Anderson, including Dr. Christopher Logothetis and Dr. Robert Wolff; Dr. Gloria Hui with the Houston Cardiac Clinic; and the Houston Hospice nurses and staff for their excellent care and compassion.

A remembrance service will be held for Clyde on September 3rd at 10:30 AM at Holy Spirit Episcopal Church, 12535 Perthshire, Houston, TX 77024.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to MD Anderson Cancer Center, Holy Spirit Episcopal Church or a charity of your choice.
