Alice Castro

Alice Vara Castro, of Houston, Texas passed away on Thursday, January 6th, at the age of sixty-four.

Alice was born to Jesse T. Vara and Virginia P. Vara in Houston, Texas. She is survived by her husband of forty years, Dorian Castro and their three children. Jessica Soto and husband Daniel of Houston Texas, Alan Castro and wife Sarah of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Aaron Castro of Houston, Texas. Her Granddaughter Talia Soto and her grandson Victor Soto will cherish their memories of their Grandma Alice.

She also leaves behind nine brothers and sisters who will miss her dearly. Frances Vara (Bernell), Eloise Price, Irene Cardenas, Robert Vara (Brenda), Louis Vara (Linda) , Virginia Peace, (David), Celia Valles (Louis), Jesse Vara Jr., Sara Benavides (Phillip), her Aunt Celia Tovar and many nieces and nephews.

Alice grew up on Houston’s North Side and studied at Davis High School and the University of St. Thomas. She and her family attended Mass at St. Stephen’s and Holy Name Catholic Church. She served her parish and community by teaching CCD classes at Holy Name and was blessed to meet her future husband at the same church. After many years dedicated to raising her children at home, she returned to the work force and spent the next twenty-four years at Cisneros Design Studio.

Alice loved her family ,friends and her Astros. You would always find her in an Astro’s baseball cap, scarf and the pearls her husband Dorian gave her on their thirtieth wedding anniversary. She lived for her family and had only begun the chapters of her life as a loving grandmother. She was taken from us too soon and will be missed every day.
