In Loving Memory of Walter Joseph Zerkow

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Walter Joseph Zerkow, beloved husband, brother, uncle, and friend, who departed this life on July 9th, 2025 at the age of 73.

Born on December 25, 1951 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Walt is preceded in death by his parents Florence A. Zerkow and Walter J. Zerkow Sr. Walt is survived by his devoted wife of 49 years, Syma Zerkow, his brother Paul Zerkow and wife Brenda of Woodbridge, VA; his nieces, Alissa Blankenship (JB), Kristin Barbier (Kevin) and Stephanie Zerkow, and great nieces and nephews, cousins, and countless friends, neighbors, and loved ones whose lives were made brighter by knowing him.

Walt attended St. Joseph’s Preparatory School and the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. His early career was rooted in engineering and construction, working with several prominent firms, including Jacobs Engineering. An opportunity brought Walt and Syma to Houston, Texas, in 1975. As his career evolved, Walt transitioned into computer technology management, ultimately serving as Vice President of Oracle’s Industrial Sector Consulting division.

Walt’s passion for travel took him across continents, where he immersed himself in new cultures, savored exquisite cuisines, and collected memories that enriched his soul and inspired those around him. Walt was an extraordinary chef who took great joy in hosting unforgettable meals for family and friends. His home was often the heart of celebration, filled with the aromas of gourmet dishes, laughter, and the warmth of his generous spirit.

Together with his wife, Syma, Walt shared a deep appreciation for the arts. Their love for the theater and ballet was reflected through their support for the Houston Ballet, Performing Arts Houston, Stages, and the Alley Theatre among others.

Though he had no children of his own, Walt poured his love generously into the lives of his nieces and nephews, who affectionately remember him as a constant source of joy, wisdom, and unwavering support. His home was always warm and welcoming, often shared with his beloved dogs, who brought him great comfort and companionship throughout the years.

A celebration of Walt’s remarkable life will be held at a future date.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Houston Food Bank or the Houston SPCA or a charity of your choice.

He lived fully, gave freely, and loved deeply. He will be missed beyond measure.
