Sybil Odessa Shaw Covington, 97, peacefully went to be with our Lord and Savior on December 23, 2020 in the presence of family. Sybil was born June 13, 1923 in Ruston, Louisiana to Nacy Alex Shaw Sr. and Ethel Lena Dunn Shaw.
Sybil was a loving, caring and devoted daughter, mother, wife, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to many. She lived her life with grace and dignity, and was a child of God.
In her early years, Sybil was a telephone switchboard operator but being a mother and homemaker was her lifelong calling. She was a passionate artist in various mediums of oil, acrylic, and charcoal and participated in art showings. Sybil owned an art and office supply store and enjoyed teaching her craft to art students. Sybil loved being among people, fishing, laughing, and she just enjoyed life in general. She was very active in her church; and in the choir, she sang soprano to the Lord.
Sybil is predeceased by her husband of almost 65 years, Aubrey M. Covington Sr., son Aubrey Melvin (Mel) Covington Jr., parents N.A. and Lena Shaw, brothers (and sisters-in-law) Archie Shaw, John Ross (Jean) Shaw, Alex (Geraldine) Shaw Jr, James (Sue) Shaw and sisters (and brothers-in-law) Lucille (Felton) Traylor and Hazel (Carl) Hendrick, and brother-in-law E.J. Hodge. Sybil is survived by her sister Hellon Hodge.
Sybil is also survived by daughters Sharon Rhodes and Linda (Tom) Cressman; grandchildren Tricia Nichols, Breena Rhodes, Michael (Stephanie) Cressman, Bradley Grace (Peter) DeHaan, Rebecca (Tom) Fuller and Catherine (Tom) Borresen, 14 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held in 2021 when family and friends can gather to celebrate Sybil’s long and loving life.
