After the sun set, the Houston, Texas rain came in, and the guitar of Stevie Ray Vaughn’s Texas Flood played on; Mark Aubyn Mangum passed away peacefully Thursday evening of October 1, 2026 covered in love.
Born in Santa Monica, California on August 24, 1950 to Buford “Dee” Aubyn Mangum, an Air Force pilot, and Frances “Jane” Mangum, a dashing San Antonio, Texas native. The family would move briefly to Syracuse, NY and settle down in Daytona Beach, Florida. Mark would graduate from Seabreeze High School and spend his young adulthood patrolling the infamous drivable beachfront while working in the Ormand Beach neighborhood. He would attend many Sandcrab Hippie Reunions over the years resulting in decades of friendships.
Mark would make his way to Texas as part of a construction crew to end up with over forty years in the Bright Lights of Houston where he proudly called his second home. Here he had a diverse career; covering both corporate insurance and general construction. Mark would consume the variety of culture the city had to offer and took pride in sharing its history. Most notably would be his passion for live music and supporting hours of blues guitars across an array of establishments in the greater area. Equally as important would be his utter love for fishing off the Texas Gulf Coast in Sargent amongst friends who became family.
Honorably, Mark found his sobriety in Houston and would dedicate just shy of 29 years to the program. His family would like to acknowledge how proud we are of such achievement and express gratitude to those supporting his journey. No longer “Tied to the Whipping Post” (The Allman Brothers) – may your rest remain calm and in peace.
Mark is survived by his brother Bill Mangum and sister-in-law Cynthia Mangum; three daughters; Sara Greenfield, Becca McAlpin, and Madelyne Mangum; and four grandchildren; Ayden Greenfield, Gannon Greenfield, Palmer McAlpin, and Hogan McAlpin. In addition to friends far and wide and loved ones he held close.
A private celebration of life and scattering of ashes will be held by the family at a later date.
