Lupe F. Herrera, known as “Wally” or “Wallace” to those who knew and loved him, passed away on Saturday, July 15, 2023, in Webster, TX. Wally was born to Dora Flores and Tito Ramírez (David Herrera adoptive father) on February 20, 1948 in his family home at 1411 Newton St. in Northside Houston.

Wally attended Looscan Elementary, Marshall Middle School, Jeff Davis High School, and North Harris County College, where he made many life-long friends. He was a long-time parishioner at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and a 4th degree Knight of Columbus. After graduation from high school, he joined the U.S. Air Force, serving in the Vietnam War. He was a proud veteran and felt blessed to be an American. But he was also proud to be a Mexican American and volunteered for many years with LULAC, eventually serving as the Chaplain for the National LULAC Board. He worked for over twenty years as a mailman and performed his job honorably, making friends wherever he delivered the mail.

Wally was very proud of his two sons, Dr. Spencer R. Herrera and Sergio L. Herrera. He was a devoted father who taught his sons to be good men. He also deeply loved his two granddaughters, Sofía C. Herrera and Emiliana C. Herrera. He is survived by his two sons, Spencer and Sergio, former wife Yolanda Hernández, sister Linda Aguirre, brother Nick Cepeda, sister Sylvia Cepeda, close cousin Raymond López, uncle Mario Chávez, granddaughters Sofía and Emmie, and other dear family members and many friends. He is preceded in death by his mother Dora Cepeda, brother Richard Ramírez, and grandmother Simona Murphy.

Wally will be greatly missed. He made friends and strangers laugh with his quick wit and funny jokes. Wally was an avid fisherman. So, this is a not a good-bye. Wally just got a head start at Heaven’s best fishing spots so he can brag about all the fish he’s catching. Que en paz descanse.

A memorial mass will be held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church on Thursday, July 20, 2023 at 11:30am with a celebration of life to follow in the parish hall. His ashes will be interred at the Houston National (Veteran) Cemetery with military honors at a later date to be determined.
