Jill Guthrie

April 2, 1944 — April 1, 2015

Jill Elaine Polhamus Guthrie, 70, went to be with the Lord on April 1st, 2015. She is survived by her sons Matt (Connie), and Logan (Deanna), her grandsons Zachary, Joshua & Logan (LJ) & granddaughter Krista, her two brothers Garrett (Hattie) Polhamus & Clint (Linda) Polhamus, and many nieces & nephews. Jill attended Fairfax High School, Fairfax, Virginia in 1962. She studied Conservatory music at University of Cincinnati College in 1963 and graduated from University of Texas in 1967. While at UT, Jill met Michael Guthrie on a blind date and they soon became married. After moving around to several states, she eventually planted roots in Missouri City, TX where she raised her two sons. Jill retired from Houston Independent School District back in 2006. At that time she had 34 years of dedicated teaching to the district. She then decided to return as a permanent substitute until January of this year, giving her 40 + years of teaching. During those years she taught both Art & Music along with directing multiple Christmas plays at the school. Music being a passion of hers, and wanting to help others, she also held private piano lessons at her home, teaching many children how to play. Jill's faith was of the highest; she was very passionate and firm about her Christianity, the bible and Jesus. She attended several different churches before finding a home at Sugar Creek Baptist church. She also attended a Wednesday morning bible study class "Mary Ministries" at Sugar Land First United Methodist Church. For almost 10 years, she was a Christian Care Giver as a trained Stephen Minister. Jill was also very active in small groups outside of church. She was a sponsor to many people in a support group locally, spending 34 years volunteering and supporting hundreds of individuals as they experienced difficulties in their lives. She was always only a phone call away. Jill has been a proud and active "Charter-member" of the Bayou City Singers for 43 years where she shared her remarkable voice with many. She was also an active member of the "Red-Hatters" group, eventually being voted on as Queen. She enjoyed traveling. She went to Scotland, Alaska and to the Holy Land to see the birthplace of Jesus. She really enjoyed summer vacation get-a-ways. She grew up going to the beach and spending time with family, it was very important to continue that tradition with her children & grandchildren as well. Memorial Service is April 8, 2015 at Sugar Creek Baptist Church in Sugar Land...2:30 pm.
