Helen Lengel

March 10, 1927 — November 26, 2019

Helen Dorothy Lengel passed away at her residence in Houston, TX on November 26, 2019, at the age of 92. Helen was born in Detroit, MI on March 10, 1927, the only child of Venyimin "Nick" Lengel and Flora Albu Lengel. Helen's parents, grandmother, aunts and uncles all immigrated to the United States in the early 1900s from Romania. They became part of the large Romanian immigrant community in Detroit.
Helen graduated from Wayne State University in Detroit, receiving her Master's Degree in Social Work. Always interested in helping others, Helen worked for many years as a Social Worker, first in Michigan, then from 1974 onwards in Texas, including many years at Methodist Hospital in Houston.
Helen loved working, and continued to work until the age of 85, when foot surgery prevented her from driving a car. She contributed and volunteered for many charitable organizations, including the USO
Helen loved the arts. She taught Romanian folk dancing and took ballet lessons, as well as learning to play the piano. She also loved to travel and visited Europe, Asia and Central America. She was thrilled when she won a ride in the Goodyear Blimp.
Helen was married from 1950 to 1968 to Jack Maschhoff, a Sergeant in the US Army Air Force during World War II. Although Helen had no children, she had hundreds of friends. She was famous for always remembering birthdays, anniversaries, weddings and holidays. She once said she mailed out 400 Christmas Cards!
Although her short term memory began to fail, she never forgot her friends from childhood and work. By the time of her death, Helen had no close living relatives in the United States, but she is survived by those who called her part of their family, including Jack Fletcher, Don and Bev Fletcher, and Sherry and Clyde Garland. Other close friends include god-daughters Kristen Lund and Jenni Ann Bowen, and their mother, Elizabeth Lund (all of Michigan); Maggie Hightower, Shirley Chen and Silvia Vargas, all of Houston. Helen will be greatly missed by those she touched in her long, wonderful life.
