Harodis Sotomayor Correa

Harodis Sotomayor was born in Arecibo, Puerto Rico on November 28,1956. She grew up on the island as one of 9 children. Because of family hardships, she was raised by her Aunt Maria L. Olmo in San Juan, but always maintained a very close relationship to her mother who frequently visited her. From an early age, Harodis was taught the gospel and carried its tenets close to her heart. There was never a moment where the pursuit of Christ was not the most integral part of her life.

She graduated from Gabriela Mistral High School in San Juan, and then went off to attend the University. She studied for a couple of years to become a teacher at the Universidad InterAmericana, in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico.

Harodis worked for a time at A.H. Robins, also in Puerto Rico, and was very well respected by the staff there. She had a knack for always doing everything that was handed to her with the utmost excellence. It was never anything less than her best, in any endeavor she undertook.

During her college years, she met the love of her life, Carlos Edwin Sotomayor Colon, and they married on February 17, 1979. Because of a job opportunity afforded to Carlos, they decided to move the family to Houston, Texas, where they settled for over 30 years.

During her time in Houston, Harodis continued to serve and work in many capacities, enriching the lives of all that had the privilege to know her. She cared for many of the children in their first neighborhood and poured her love and light into their lives. She also worked as a teacher’s aide in Aldine ISD, but spent the majority of her years serving in the Klein Independent School District.

Harodis was a gifted singer and used her talent in church on many occasions. Her children grew up watching her rehearse her songs on her karaoke machine in the living room, almost weekly. For a period of time, she was a frequent guest singer on the TBN Christian Spanish television program, Dile a Las Americas. She also lead worship with her husband Carlos, on numerous occasions when they were needed. They were members at Northside Assembly of God, before relocating the family for a brief time in Puerto Rico. Once they returned to Houston, they were members at Spring First Assembly and then North Central Assembly of God, which Harodis faithfully attended until the time of her death.

She is survived by all three of her children, Carlos Sotomayor and his wife Elisama, Elvin Sotomayor and his wife Lauren, and Michele Sotomayor McCann and her husband James. She also leaves behind 7 grandchildren; Daniel Elias, Ezequiel Jair, Emmanuel Isai, Isabella Grace, Eden Elizabeth, Samuel Patrick, and Archer Worth.

Harodis Sotomayor nació en Arecibo, Puerto Rico, el 28 de noviembre de 1956. Creció en la isla como una de nueve hermanos. Debido a dificultades familiares, fue criada por su tía, María L. Olmo, en San Juan, pero siempre mantuvo una relación muy cercana con su madre, quien la visitaba con frecuencia. Desde temprana edad, a Harodis se le enseñó el evangelio y llevó sus principios profundamente en el corazón. Nunca hubo un momento en el que la búsqueda de Cristo no fuera la parte más integral de su vida.

Se graduó de la escuela superior Gabriela Mistral en San Juan, y luego asistió a la universidad. Estudió por un par de años para ser maestra en la Universidad Interamericana, en Hato Rey, Puerto Rico.

Harodis trabajó por un tiempo en A.H. Robins, también en Puerto Rico, y fue muy respetada por el personal allí. Tenía un don para hacer todo lo que se le encomendaba con la mayor excelencia. No había nada que hiciera sin dar lo mejor de sí misma, en cualquier tarea que emprendiera.

Durante sus años universitarios, conoció al amor de su vida, Carlos Edwin Sotomayor Colón, y se casaron el 17 de febrero de 1979. Gracias a una oportunidad de trabajo ofrecida a Carlos, decidieron mudarse a Houston, Texas, donde se establecieron por más de 30 años.

Durante su tiempo en Houston, Harodis continuó sirviendo y trabajando en muchas capacidades, enriqueciendo la vida de todos los que tuvieron el privilegio de conocerla. Cuidó a muchos niños en su primer vecindario y derramó su amor y luz en sus vidas. También trabajó como asistente de maestra en Aldine ISD, pero pasó la mayor parte de sus años sirviendo en el distrito escolar independiente de Klein.

Harodis era una cantante talentosa y usó su don en la iglesia en muchas ocasiones. Sus hijos crecieron viéndola ensayar sus canciones en su máquina de karaoke en la sala, casi todas las semanas. Durante un tiempo, fue cantante invitada frecuente en el programa de televisión cristiano en español de TBN, Dile a las Américas. También dirigió la alabanza junto a su esposo Carlos en numerosas ocasiones cuando se necesitaba. Fueron miembros de Northside Assembly of God, antes de mudarse por un breve tiempo a Puerto Rico. Al regresar a Houston, fueron miembros de Spring First Assembly y luego de North Central Assembly of God, donde Harodis asistió fielmente hasta el momento de su fallecimiento.

Le sobreviven sus tres hijos: Carlos Sotomayor y su esposa Elisama, Elvin Sotomayor y su esposa Lauren, y Michele Sotomayor McCann y su esposo James. También deja atrás a siete nietos: Daniel Elías, Ezequiel Jair, Emmanuel Isaí, Isabella Grace, Eden Elizabeth, Samuel Patrick y Archer Worth
