The world became a little quieter on July 26, 2026, when Dr. Kenneth George Ballard, of Houston, Texas, left us at the age of 90. To know Kenneth was to know devotion- to family, to medicine, to service, and the countless lives he touched with his steady hands and generous spirit.

Born in Alice, Texas on February 22, 1936, to Kenith Lee Ballard and Marian Elizabeth Momeny, Kenneth discovered his calling earlier than most. At just 10 years old, a neighbor and physician gifted him a stethoscope for Christmas. That simple act sparked a lifelong purpose. From that moment, nothing was clearer to him than the path he was meant to walk.

Kenneth graduated from Lamar High School in 1954, then attended the University of Houston before earning his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the University of Kansas City College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1963, where he was a proud member of Eta Chapter 371 of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.

Kenneth’s life took a profound turn soon after, when he volunteered to serve in Vietnam. In 1966, Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara authorized military medical teams to recognize osteopathic physicians on equal footing with MDs- and Kenneth became one of the first DOS to answer the call.

From 1967 to 1968, Dr. Ballard served as an Army anesthesiologist at the 24th Evacuation Hospital in South Vietnam. There, he earned the nickname “The Face”- the last calm, reassuring presence a soldier saw before drifting into anesthesia. His service was marked by courage, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to those in his care.

In 1978, Kenneth met the love of his life, Eliana Maria Nogueira da Gama, and together they built a family rooted in love and resilience. Their first child, Vanessa, arrived as the first grandchild for Kenith and Marian. Soon after came their sons Chester, and identical twins Andrew and Anthony, the latter of whom lived only a few days but remained forever held in their hearts.

Dr. Ballard owned and operated medical practices in South Houston and the East End, where he became the neighborhood physician for decades. Long before the area was known as EaDo, he was its trusted doctor- the one who never rushed, never treated patients like numbers, and never surrendered to the digital age. He preferred handwritten notes, long conversations, and genuine human connection. Dr. Ballard remained busy traveling from his clinic to nearby hospitals, continuing to care for patients wherever he was needed. He cared. He remembered. His patients felt seen, heard, and valued. Outside of medicine, Kenneth was an avid antique collector, a hobby he shared with his wife. His collections ranged from forgotten kitchen gadgets that later resurged in popularity at his hands, to antique books and postage stamps. Cooking was one of his great joys, and he delighted in bringing old tools back to life in the kitchen. He also had a fondness for old cinema and a strong cup of black coffee- a pairing that brought him calm and contentment at the end of a long day. His pets were never far; at any meal, they sat faithfully at his side waiting for their treat. You could rest assured they ate well too. He listened.

Throughout his career, Dr. Ballard received numerous awards, recognizing his excellence and dedication. One of the most meaningful came in 2007, when he and Eliana traveled to Chicago for the American Osteopathic House of Delegates commemoration, where he was honored as one of the first DO medical officers to serve in Vietnam.

Kenneth retired in 2013, leaving behind a legacy defined not only by medical skill, but by humanity. He was a golden doctor- the kind rarely found today- and his impact lives on in the families he served, the soldiers he comforted, and the loved ones who will forever carry his memory.

Kenneth is preceded in death by his parents, Kenith and Marian Ballard, and his infant son Anthony. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Eliana, his daughter Vanessa and granddaughter Ingrid, his sons Chester and Andrew, and his niece Telisa Massuda, all of whom will carry forward his legacy with love and pride.
