David James Gruber was loved by his family and friends who are saddened by his passing on June 10, 2026. He was a kind man who lived a simple life – just how he wanted it. He was a physically strong man, working and playing hard in the Texas heat. Working for Pioneer Exterminating Co. for 35 years, Dave completed his jobs with professional pride and competence. Along with Richard Daniel and Geno Wild, Dave was a founding member of the Bud Men softball team who played together for almost 20 years and made numerous deep runs in state qualifying tournaments and the Houston Chronicle tournament. He was also a part of several other softball teams and will be missed by his teammates. Dave loved to barbeque and was often seen behind the grill at Houston Texans’ tail gate parties and in friends’ backyards. Above all else, Dave enjoyed the natural beauty of the ocean and countryside, fishing and hunting and biking with friends. When his parents needed more care in the later years of their lives, he stepped up to support them with his time and energy. Dave is preceded in death by parents Marian and Bob Gruber. He is survived by siblings Mary Byrd (Don), Tom Gruber (Rhia) and John Gruber (Betty).
Overall, family and friends who knew David well say he was an honest man with a big heart, standing strong in a challenging world. We remember him for his kindness, humor and fun-loving ways. He was always happy to be with family, watching his nieces and nephews grow, celebrating holidays together. He will be missed by us all. The family will host a celebration of Dave’s life later this summer.
