Houston National Cemetery
Starts at 1:45 pm (Central time)
Daniel Lewis Hicks, 67, passed away on Sunday, August 9, 2026, in the Woodlands, Texas.
Graveside Service: 1:45 p.m., Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at Houston National Cemetery in Houston, Texas. Daniel will be laid to rest with military honors and the playing of Taps, in the same national cemetery where his father is buried.
Daniel was born on November 19, 1958, in Mesquite, Texas, to CWO Walter Daniel Hicks and Alice (Andrews) Hicks.
Daniel was especially proud of his military service and carried a lifelong love of the cowboy way of life. A rodeo cowboy at heart, he also fancied himself a songwriter and was rarely short on a story to tell.
In more recent years, Daniel found a supportive and caring community in Huntsville, Texas. His family is especially grateful to the friends and members of that community who looked out for him, offered friendship and kindness, and extended generosity to him. Knowing that he had people around him who cared provides comfort to his family.
Daniel was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Daniel Hicks and Alice (Andrews) Hicks; his brother, Ronald Walter Hicks; and his niece, Erin Elizabeth Hicks.
He is survived by his sisters, Alice Ann Haygood, Dianne Hicks, Dorothy Lynn Hicks Brekke, and Darlene Hicks; his four children, Jessica Gravett, Chaunti Timmerman, Destiny Whitner, and W.D. Paden Smith; and eight grandchildren.
For an old rodeo cowboy who was never much for fences, may Heaven's gate swing wide, may the horse be quiet, and may the country stretch forever.
Ride easy, cowboy.
