Obituary

Claudia Gray Thornton, 76, of Houston, Texas, passed away peacefully on March 18, 2026. She was affectionately known as the “Cajun Queen” and “Mamee” and her warmth and vibrant spirit touched all who knew her. Claudia was surrounded by her family after battling pancreatic cancer for only a few weeks. She fought with perseverance and with faith in God, guiding her with strength, grace, and unwavering hope as she held tight to a small wooden cross.

Claudia was born on February 7, 1950, in Crowley, Louisiana. She was a proud LSU Tiger and her stripes of loyalty and enthusiasm remained intact no matter their standings. She began her career as a schoolteacher in Houston, a role she enjoyed, and surely her students did too. Following that, she dedicated herself to raising her family starting in 1978.

Claudia is survived by her devoted husband of more than 51 years, Gardner S. Thornton; their three children, Drew Thornton and wife Kelly, Gray Thornton and Madelyn Wycoff and her husband Ross; and her four beloved grandchildren, Laine Thornton, Grayson Thornton, Wilson Wycoff, and Emily Wycoff.

She is also survived by her brother Page Gray, his wife Judy and son Page; her brother Thomas Gray, his wife Suzanne and their children Taylor, Alex and Page Elizabeth and sister Gretchen Ohlenforst and husband Jude and their children John and Will as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her brother-in-law Peter K. Thornton of Port O’Connor.

She will be remembered for her deep love of the outdoors and the joy she found in life’s simple pleasures like reading, gardening, taking long walks, playing cards with friends, and time spent at the ranch. Claudia had a passion for animals and loved birds and was very involved with the Gulf Coast Birding Organization. She competed with friends in golf, tennis, working out and pickleball… and was hard to beat in any of those activities.

She cherished her grandchildren dearly and would jump through hoops to be with them at any chance. They too loved her back and cherished the influence and the fun that she proudly embraced. She enjoyed fishing and loved helping her grandchildren and their friends fish. She joyfully pursued the biggest fish, the most points, and the best bets, always with a smile and good sportsmanship.

Claudia’s warmth, energy, and selfless love for faith, family and friendship will be dearly missed by all who knew her. She was loved by all and will be forever remembered as the “best of the best”.

Pastor Matt Russell from Chapelwood Church was close to her and the family in her final hours and was a great comfort in raising her to the arms of Jesus.

The Thornton family is grateful to their many friends for their prayers, good wishes and many gifts that were so helpful in not only in supporting her but all of us.

The family gives special thanks to her caregivers at MD Anderson Cancer Center and Houston Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, please remember her to the Salvation Army(Houston Area Command), The Crossing at Chapelwood Methodist Church, Houston Humane Society or your favorite charity.

A Celebration of Claudia’s Life will be held in the Sanctuary at Chapelwood Methodist Church at 2:30PM on Thursday March 26, 2026.
