Edward Stanton

February 21, 1937 — July 24, 2022

Edward Jerome Stanton, 85 of Lumberton left this earth on July 24, 2022 to begin his eternal life in heaven after a several year battle with Alzheimer’s disease.  He was surrounded by his loving family who took care of him during his illness.  Jerry was born in El Paso, Texas on February 21, 1937 to Harold Stanton and Florence Schoneman Stanton.  They hitchhiked to Texas from Elmira, New York when Florence was pregnant with Jerry.  They moved back to Elmira, NY at one point but his father decided he no longer wanted to endure the bad winters and announced that come spring they were moving back to Texas.  Jerry attended school in Vidor, TX where he graduated in 1955.  One of the things he loved to do was to go to the Pig Stand and hang out with his friends.  He had a great love for old cars and 50’s music.  His Dad owned and operated a furniture store where Jerry worked as a teen, delivering furniture.  After he graduated from high school, he married Joyce and later enlisted in the Army and went to Hawaii.  He and Joyce had three children together and after returning to Texas, he worked in furniture retail. He moved to Nebraska three different times but always returned to Texas.  He worked in a furniture store in San Antonio and then came back to Beaumont where he worked at Howells, Karotkins, Webergs, and also Ethan Allen.  His love for Jesus began as a young boy attending church with friends.  When he moved to Vidor, he attended First UMC of Vidor where he and some other kids would swing from the rafters when the church was being built.  As an adult, he chaired a lot of committees at that church and also taught Sunday School.  He went on the Walk to Emmaus right after his first wife, Joyce, passed away and found great peace there.  He also worked the Kairos Prison Ministry for many years and was the Weekend Leader in March of 2010 for Kairos #25. While at First UMC in Vidor, a group of people started going into Mexico at the Del Rio border to work in an orphanage. They would do repair work on the orphanage and hold classes with the children. In September of 2010, he visited Woodcrest UMC and upon walking into the sanctuary, he stopped and looked around and told Billie, I feel the Holy Spirit here.  He also told her he felt like we were supposed to be members at Woodcrest.  It wasn’t long after that, he and Billie joined Woodcrest and have felt the love of the membership ever since.  Jerry is survived by his wife, Billie Stanton of Lumberton; Daughters, Cathy Ardis of College Station, Judy Brian of Moulton, Alabama and her husband John; Bonus Daughter, Tamara Case of Vidor, and her husband Joey; Bonus Son Brent Dunham of Beaumont and his wife Audrea.  Grandchildren include Jason Ardis, Eddie Silva, Bonus Grandchildren Chantelle Rogers, Matthew Case and Great Grandchildren, Sandi Knost Barton, Kelsey Knost, Hunter McCray, Madison Fredieu, Bonus Great Grandchildren, Madeline Rogers, Macy Rogers, Kent Rogers and Jackson Rogers.  He also has 6 Great Great Grandchildren.  He is preceded in death by his wife Joyce Valentine Stanton, son Edward Stanton Jr, Granddaughter Shannon Knost and Grandson Jake Ardis.
